Choice Creates Happiness
Updated: 4 minutes ago

You may not choose everything that happens to you, but you can choose what happens within you.
Hey Gem, for a long time, I think I misunderstood happiness.
I thought happiness was something life gave you when everything finally started going right.
When you had enough money.
When your relationships felt secure.
When you reached your goals.
When you healed.
When you became the version of yourself you kept imagining.
Basically, happiness was always somewhere in the future.
I’ll be happier when…
But the problem with living that way is that there will always be another “when.”
Another goal.
Another problem.
Another level.
Another thing that needs fixing.
Eventually, I started realizing something:
Choice creates happiness.
Not because we can simply choose to never feel sad, disappointed, angry, lonely, or overwhelmed.
We’re human. Those emotions are part of being alive.
But we have far more choice in our lives than we sometimes realize.
You Can't Choose Everything
Some things happen to us without our permission.
People disappoint us.
Plans fall apart.
Opportunities disappear.
Relationships change.
We make mistakes.
We experience loss.
Sometimes we work incredibly hard and still don't get the outcome we wanted.
You cannot control every circumstance.
But happiness doesn't require complete control.
It requires recognizing where your control actually begins.
You can choose what you give your attention to.
You can choose who has access to you.
You can choose whether you continue carrying something that already happened.
You can choose what habits you build.
You can choose whether you speak kindly to yourself.
You can choose whether one bad morning becomes a bad day.
You can choose whether rejection becomes proof that you're incapable or simply redirection toward something different.
You can choose to try again.
And sometimes those small choices change your entire life.

Happiness Is Often Hidden in Ordinary Decisions
We tend to imagine life-changing decisions as these huge dramatic moments.
Sometimes they are.
But most of our lives are built through decisions that seem almost insignificant while we're making them.
Getting out of bed when you don't feel motivated.
Going for the walk.
Opening the book.
Sending the message.
Saying no.
Saying yes.
Leaving the environment you've outgrown.
Trying something you've never done before.
Resting instead of feeling guilty for being tired.
Choosing not to respond to something that would disturb your peace.
Putting your phone down and actually experiencing your life.
These choices don't always create instant happiness.
Sometimes the right choice is uncomfortable first.
That's something I think we forget.
The Right Choice Doesn't Always Feel Good
Choosing yourself can feel lonely.
Setting boundaries can make you feel guilty.
Starting over can feel terrifying.
Discipline can feel inconvenient.
Walking away from something familiar can hurt even when you know staying would hurt more.
Growth doesn't always introduce itself as happiness.
Sometimes it introduces itself as discomfort.
But there is a difference between choosing what feels good right now and choosing what creates a life that feels good to live.
Temporary comfort can keep us trapped in permanent dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, a difficult decision today can create freedom later.
That's why happiness isn't simply about chasing good feelings.
It's about becoming intentional with your choices.

Stop Giving Your Happiness Away
One of the easiest ways to become unhappy is to place your happiness in someone else's hands.
When they text me, I'll feel better.
When they apologize, I'll have closure.
When they understand me, I'll have peace.
When people support me, I'll believe in myself.
When someone chooses me, I'll finally feel worthy.
But now your emotional life depends on decisions that aren't yours.
That's exhausting.
You can appreciate love without making another person responsible for your happiness.
You can desire an apology without requiring one to heal.
You can want people to understand you without abandoning yourself when they don't.
You can love people and still choose yourself.
Your happiness becomes much more stable when you stop requiring the world to behave exactly how you want before you allow yourself to experience peace.
Choose the Life You're Actually Living
Sometimes we're so focused on becoming better that we forget to enjoy who we already are.
Growth is beautiful.
Ambition is beautiful.
Wanting more for yourself is beautiful.
But your life isn't only the destination you're working toward.
This is your life too.
The messy middle.
The beginning stages.
The days when you're still figuring things out.
The season where you're building.
The version of you who hasn't accomplished everything yet.
She deserves happiness too.
You don't have to wait until you've completely transformed your life before you're allowed to enjoy it.
Buy yourself the flowers.
Play the music.
Celebrate the small win.
Go outside.
Laugh loudly.
Spend time with people who make you feel alive.
Be proud of yourself for something nobody else noticed.
Create little moments worth remembering.
Happiness doesn't always arrive as some enormous breakthrough.
Sometimes happiness is simply noticing that there is something beautiful happening right now.

Ask Yourself: What Am I Choosing?
When you feel disconnected from yourself, ask:
What am I choosing every day?
Am I choosing environments that drain me?
Am I choosing thoughts that constantly criticize me?
Am I choosing people because they're familiar rather than healthy for me?
Am I choosing habits that support the person I'm becoming?
Am I choosing fear because it's comfortable?
Am I constantly postponing joy until I've accomplished something else?
You don't need to completely reinvent yourself overnight.
Choose one thing differently.
Then choose again tomorrow.
Because eventually, choices become habits.
Habits become patterns.
Patterns become lifestyles.
And lifestyles become lives.
Happiness Is Something You Participate In
I don't believe happiness means pretending everything is wonderful.
Some seasons genuinely hurt.
Some days you're going to cry.
Some things need to be grieved instead of positively reframed.
But even during difficult seasons, we still have choices.
Maybe today happiness isn't excitement.
Maybe it's peace.
Maybe it's getting through the day without being cruel to yourself.
Maybe it's calling someone you love.
Maybe it's praying.
Maybe it's resting.
Maybe it's finally admitting something needs to change.
Maybe it's choosing hope when you don't have evidence yet that everything will work out.
Happiness doesn't have to be loud to be real.
And perhaps that's the biggest lesson:

🪽 Wing It Wisely: Action Steps
Happiness isn't one giant decision. It's built through the small choices you make repeatedly. This week, become more intentional about what you're choosing.
1. Notice your choices. For one day, pay attention to the decisions you make automatically—what you consume, who you give your energy to, how you speak to yourself, and what you do with your free time.
2. Ask: “Is this helping the person I’m becoming?” Before making a decision, pause and ask yourself whether it supports the life, peace, and version of yourself you're trying to create.
3. Choose one thing differently. Don't try to change your entire life overnight. Pick one small choice you know would improve your life and intentionally make it this week.
4. Create happiness today. Do one thing simply because it brings genuine joy or peace into your life. Don't make yourself earn it first.
5. Take your power back. Identify one thing you've been waiting for someone else to do—apologize, validate you, choose you, understand you, or change. Ask yourself: What can I choose for myself instead?
Your Wing It Wisely Challenge
For the next 7 days, end each day by writing:
Today I chose ______ instead of ______.
Then ask yourself:
Did that choice move me closer to the life I want?
You don't need to have your entire life figured out. You just need to become wiser about the choices creating it.
Choose intentionally. Choose wisely.
🪽You don't find happiness once and keep it forever. You continue choosing the things that allow happiness to grow.
Choose peace.
Choose growth.
Choose gratitude.
Choose boundaries.
Choose people who pour into you.
Choose experiences.
Choose yourself.
Choose to believe your life is happening now—not someday when everything is perfect.
You won't always get to choose what life puts in front of you.
But you do get a choice in what you create from it.
And sometimes, that choice changes everything.
Your wing,
Aralynn🪽
